The Sabbath

Honoring the Sabbath as a day unto the Lord is a command that has been on our family’s heart for some time- especially on my dad’s. Throughout the years, we have striven to live out our Sundays in accordance to the examples we see in the Bible (for example, we try not to transact any business on the Lord’s Day). We desire to better understand and obey our God to “keep the Sabbath holy.” We believe that the Ten Commandments (and indeed, the entire Old Testament) is applicable to all Christians and should be obeyed (II Timothy 3:16, 17). In seeking out the Lord’s will for our Sabbath rests, we do not set ourselves up to be legalistic (trying to “earn” salvation or merit by our works), nor to be Pharisaical (looking for what we can get away with). We are instead, searching to know God’s heart on a matter that He says is important so that we may therefore, honor Him as God.

Recently dad has given us children the assignment to search out the Word to answer many questions we have about Sabbath. So far, the findings have been fascinating, giving us much to talk about. We children are learning first hand what it means to “work out [our] salvation with fear and trembling.”

Below I have posted some of the verses we have found. I hope they will encourage you in your own keeping of the Lord’s Day and give you much to consider.

Deuteronomy 5:12-14

‘ Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.

Isaiah 58:13

“ If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath,
From doing your pleasure on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a delight,
The holy day of the LORD honorable,
And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways,
Nor finding your own pleasure,
Nor speaking your own words,
Then you shall delight yourself in the LORD;
And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth,
And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father.
The mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

Ezekiel 20:12

Moreover I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them.
